  1. Definitions

Pathos: A technique that refers to emotional appeal where the persuader is trying to convince his or her audience by interacting with them emotionally. The emotion can have a positive or negative impact on the consumer. Pathos can either make them feel excitement, happiness, patriotism, love, fear, guilt or hate when using the product. This can be done by using vivid language which includes imagery of the five senses: auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory and gustatory imagery.

Ethos: Refers to building the credibility and trust of the product. What helps in building the character of the product is brand, celebrity, critic and doctor association. This is where the product is linked with some kind of famous brand or celebrity so that their popularity would transfer to the product. The same can be said about critics and doctors; if people hear that critics/doctors reviewed the product, they would trust the product more.

Logos: Using logic and reasoning to persuade an audience about a product in a straightforward and clear manner. It would give exact information about the product including how it works, who would use it, and what is it used for. The Internet is the most effective way of bringing out the logos of an advertisement since the audience can research more about the product.

    Questions:
    • To develop Ethos, what techniques would you use?
    • How would the effect of using Logos in print differ from using it on television?
    • To what extent would adding a narrative to an advertisement enhance the use of the Pathos technique?

  2. Pathos technique: The Pathos technique of advertising is made to play on people's emotions. The goal of the Pathos technique is to convince viewers to get their product just by playing on certain emotions such as love or excitement. The technique hopes to convince its viewers that their product will give them the same sensation that they felt when they had seen their advertisement.

Ethos technique: Ethos technique is a technique only used by people who believe very strongly in their brand and product. They rely on the name that comes along with their product and that it will be able to sell many products just because of what it is famed for. They do not need to apply other technique of persuasion in order to persuade people to buy their product. Also seeing someone trusted or famous using a product is part of Ethos as it makes people believe that they can be like their favorite celebrity if they use a certain product or if someone famous trusts a certain product.

Logos Technique: The Logos technique is the most informational technique of persuasion. Viewers will be flooded with reasons and facts in order to convince viewers. More Detail is given in the Logos technique.

    Questions:

  4. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, divided the means of persuasion into 3 categories: Pathos, Ethos and Logos.

Pathos is an appeal to the audience’s emotions and passion. This may evoke feelings of excitement, fear, happiness and may target one’s aspirations and desires.

Logos means persuading using reason or logic. This type of means of persuasion is accompanied by solid evidence, i.e, facts, research, testimonials etc.

Ethos refers to the honesty or trustworthiness of the speaker or person in authority. It can be expressed through tone and style of the message. Very often, a confident message is mostly the believable one. In order to capture the attention of a large audience, companies try to use celebrity endorsements as much as possible.

Logos: Logos is an appeal to logic reason. It informs you on the use of the product and is straightforward. Usually the internet or somewhere where you can see the text itself is better.
